The Life-Sized City - Montreal - S02 E06 - Full Episode
Although Montreal could be described as half Paris, half Brooklyn - it is after all the most populated francophone city in North America - the city has an identity of its own. Made up of a peculiar mix of creative citizens, cobblestones and potholes, #Montreal is not the biggest, nor the richest or boldest. But it's one of the best cities to live in, and it certainly is a happy underdog.

The story of Detroit's decline is well-known and now there is optimistic talk of the city's revival - the Phoenix rising from the ashes metaphor is rampant. But the focus on reviving the downtown ignores the plight of the populati...

But here in #Kyiv, the city council recently voted to cover a part of the historic #Lybid River to make a road for cars to get to ... a shopping mall. #Urbanplanni...

Livable cities are the physical medium that the digital social medium lacks. Digital socmed is essentially a bulletin board most often the physical venues to convene to are missing. I can only be envious of places who have learned the great value of community.
Oh wow I grew up in that backstreet on rue Sicard!
A great episode the first time. Also a great one this time!

Old episode that I keep coming back! My Home.
😍
Certainly, this is an interesting series, but unless one is a so-called "progressive", the relentless left wing bias becomes a little tiresome.😅
all car infested north american cities who prioritized cars over people, they doomed to get the same fate: sooner or later they will become abandoned and be in disrepair, they never become life-size city or anything close to that (as they never gave a damn about anything but cars, they lost the density and wasted money in stupid suburbs) , what you expect, all canadian cities are going to become like detroit sooner or later.
C'est merveilleux que la Ville et les citoyens aient tenu bon et fini par appliquer le plan vélo, la Lutte a été rude, elle continue pour rendre la vie respirable
I can't believe I'm just now finding your channel. Such beautiful production and an intelligent peek into what actually makes a city tick, far beyond those travel vlogs and tourism pamphlets. Can't wait to see more US cities on here. Cleveland, Philly, Pittsburgh, St. Louis would all be super interesting
Very interesing & informative video. Pl make your videos in 4K or Full or Ultra HD quality. Quality of picture of your videos is not so good, your content is always intersting though. Hope we will see this change with your next video. Thanks appreciate your efforts.
The reason of monstrosity architecture is free money many non profit organization in north america and eu use their funds for this, if it was state money there'll be reasonable size and practical bus terminal tbh if the money stop militarized israel won't exist
this video is more than 2 years old, I wonder when it was made
🇺🇸🤝🇨🇦
Why there is only 720p quality, where is full hd ? I am sure you would have much more viewers if full hd were in place
Every time people talk about wars in this land they "forget" to mention that it was always the ARABS who started wars. Why do people never seem to hold the Arabs accountable for their own doings?? They started the 1948 war and every war since, declaring to destroy Israel and attempting to do it.
Not the most beautiful definitely the most dynamic
This happened in Reykjavik, where large motorways were built according to the so called "Danish Plan" which was a cityplan that made by Danish planning consultants. Luckily not all of it came to fruition but it lead to Reykjavik being the car-centric city it is today.
I enjoyed both Detroit and my overnight stay at a house in Windsor. Many cheap flights available to get you there.
I love how engaged your children are with the dialogue. Pass it on!💪
The Rebirth of Detroit is an inspiration for both Americans and Canadians. The Gordie Howe Bridge symbolizes that. Keep up the good work. I will watch every video you put out, from my comfy home in Toronto. As rural Canadians used to say (back in the day) "Let's give'er!"
You can make farmland by enclosing an are in buildings (courtyard)
Really enjoy this series! Interesting and off the beaten path coverage. Thank you!

Anyone else getting Anthony Bourdain vibes?
Ukraine? is n't there a war going? car lobby is so powerful even war can't stop it?
Kyiv’s mayor is a disgrace of Ukraine. While our army struggles without enough funding, this freak is building highways on city streets and soviet style multi-level interchanges for tens millions dollars each.
No, no, no, you have it all wrong, he is creating an ancient sigil, drawing it neatly using multi-level roads. When finished: the sigil will attract money. Dollahs baby! All about the the dollahs!
Refugees are good, cars are bad 😂 is this a left wing promo film? 😂😂
If by "left wing promo" you mean that a city that meets the needs of the people that live in it make a better city then yes, it's left wing propaganda
@@vice2997 i dont need you to tell me what i mean 😀
@@geryjanssens1617 prioritising people over objects and money allows for a healthier, more livable city. Why care if it (or someone) is leaning 'left' or 'right' on an imaginary, 1-dimensional scale?
My first thought also. With queer flag with a peace sign. Why??It looks like a left-wing promo video.
@moebiusdune1115 dude... there was what, one scene where a rainbow flag casually appeared? It wasn't even acknowledged nor referenced. The video's almost an hour long. It's ok.
I love you 🙂 But as for this issue, it is always this "follow the money". In my home town it happened not to river (however we have one, more of a stream, but alive, yet totally devastated, an irony because this river/stream was somewhat created by Teutonic Order, so it has amazing history) but to ponds -- water vs. inner-town "highway". Building road means flow of money, it means "achievement" for the authorities, it means list of accomplishments, etc. Road won. Post-soviet countries are especially prone to this logic, because we are hungry for the items of well-being, we envied for so long, no matter how they are twisted in reality.
Pretty cool video, learned so many things about one of the most famous cities in my country. Nice One!
Your series are extremely inspiring, Mikael and let us see other cities through more interesting and realistic point of views - hope to have you over here in Istanbul!
A mad thing to do :-/
I live here, in Copenhagen, and it’s all true ! Godt gjort, Mikael !🐾🇩🇰❤
yeah, this is pretty infuriating
Great rallying cry: 'Where's my fucking river?!'
klitschko - chort
I think Ukraine is a bit more worried about not being conquered by Russia (again).
I don't think this argument holds much water. If they can decide to cover it up, then just the same they can decide to expand and renature it. Also just because something is decided doesn't mean it's happening right away. Or ever. If i were to bet, if it's about building a road, that might happen relatively quickly within a few years, but renaturing well that's going to get dragged out.
Then so many people wouldn't show up regularly at protests in front of City Hall regarding all sorts of urban issues. We live with the threat of missile strikes in Kyiv - constantly - but people in cities still demand and deserve better urban life and here they fight for it.
@@LifeSizedCity Thank you for informing me about an aspect that is not in any way reported on by my usual news sources.
nice city but still car infested and dangerous to cyclists. way way better than any north american city (they live their car supremacy), this city has lots of potential hope they actualize it into a modern walkable bikeable city
That filter made it look difrent in a bad way 👎
So many of the modern development in CPH are going against the human scale, life sized appeal that make so many parts of Copenhagen great. These new buildings and districts often feel cold and sterile with very little aesthetic appeal which then damages the street life and cozy feel of an area.
According to Tony Seba of RethinkX, autonomous EV cars as a service will free at least 75% of parking space in cities. It will no longer be attractive to own a car when you can order an autonomous one i 5 minutes for a cheap price from your phone. So EV autonomous cars are not parked - they are working horses. This leaves a lot of space in cities for bike parking.
second season going strong, keep it up ♥
Theres no way this doesnt have more views with that epic intro
Du snakker godt engelsk! Uden den gode gamle typiske Danske agsang! :-P
Sepia filter again? Come on guys, grow up! Show the real colors, the sky is also blue here... WTF
Hello. As a bike enthusiast I have to say that Copenhagen has some really big flaws with the bike lanes and bike infrastructure. One issue is that the bike lanes are often very narrow and many people are using these big box bikes (christiania bikes) to transport their kids around. A very bad combination. Also many people who doesn't really know traffic rules are riding bikes all over the city. And on these narrow lanes grandmothers are getting passed by racing cyclists and you can imagine the outcome. As a tourist I would not recommend to rent a bike unless you have experience riding it, because it can be very intimidating and dangerous (because of the false sense of security) to ride a bike in copenhagen!
